ประโยค (Sentences)
ประโยค (Sentences) หมายถึง กลุ่มคำหรือข้อความที่กล่าวออกมาแล้วมี
ใจความสมบูรณ์ ประโยคจะประกอบด้วยส่วนใหญ่ 2 ส่วน คือ
1. ภาคประธาน (Subject)
2. ภาคแสดง (Predicate)
ภาคประธาน ภาคแสดง
He shouted.
Mary was selfish.
The loose door rattled all night.
Those students study hard for their exam.
ภาคประธาน
ภาคประธานอาจมีได้หลายรูปแบบ เช่น
1. เป็นคำนาม เช่น The man walked in the rain.
2. เป็นคำสรรพนาม เช่น He was a policeman.
3. เป็นอนุประโยค เช่น What he described frightened everybody.
4. เป็น gerund เช่น Writing was her hobby.
5. เป็น gerund phrase เช่น Working in the South is dangerous.
6. เป็น infinitive เช่น To swim is a good exercise.
7. เป็น infinitive phrase เช่น To escape from the prison seems impossible
for him.
ภาคแสดง
ภาคแสดงจะต้องประกอบด้วยคำกริยา และมีกรรมที่รวมเรียกว่า Verb Completion หรือ
ส่วนขยายที่เรียกว่า Verb Modifiers
1 Verb Completion
She knows my name.
Many people complained a lot about air pollution.
2.Verb Modifiers
The teacher should speak nicely to the children.
Students can be observed in all classrooms.
ชนิดของประโยค
ประโยค (Sentences) แบ่งออกเป็น 4 ประเภท ดังนี้
1. ประโยคความเดียว (Simple Sentence)
2. ประโยคความรวม (Compound Sentence)
3. ประโยคความซ้อน (Complex Sentence)
4. ประโยคความผสม (Compound-Complex Sentence)
1. ประโยคความเดียว (Simple Sentence) คือ ประโยคที่มีประโยคอิสระ (Independent
Clause) เพียงประโยคเดียว เช่น
Linda wrote that novel.
The secretary answers the phone.
2. ประโยคความรวม (Compound Sentence) คือ ประโยคที่ประกอบด้วยประโยคอิสระ
(Independent Clause) ตั้งแต่สองประโยคขึ้นไป และมีคำสันธานหรือคำเชื่อมมาเชื่อมประโยค
เข้าด้วยกัน ได้แก่ and, but, nor, or, for, so, และ yet
University students can live in the dormitories or in the private apartment.
Woman live longer than men, for they take better care of their health.
3. ประโยคความซ้อน (Complex Sentence) คือ ประโยคผสมระหว่างประโยค
อิสระ (Independent Clause) หนึ่งประโยค กับประโยคย่อย (Subordinate Clause) อย่าง
น้อยหนึ่งประโยคขึ้นไป
Some old people are afraid of using computer while others welcome it.
Students who are in the second year are called sophomore.
Curiosity is one of the early drives which can be used to the full by the elementary school teacher.
4. ประโยคความผสม (Compound-Complex Sentence) คือ ประโยคผสม
ระหว่างประโยคความรวมกับประโยคความซ้อน
Before Jack could go to the party, he had to finish his annual report, but he found it hard to concentrate.

Identify each of the following sentences as simple, compound, complex or compound-complex.
1.Mary is clever and diligent.
2.The little girl wants to go home now.
3.Please tell me which car is yours.
4.Though John is poor, he is happy.
5.The old lady who visited us last week is my grandmother.
6.My sister works, but I play.
7You can go to the library now or next week.
8.The man, who bought your house, is my manager.
9.Tom had lost his fountain pen which his father gave it to him yesterday, so he couldn’t face with him again.
10.I can’t remember what my boss said, but I will ask him.
11.Edward handled the gardening, and Anne took care of the cooking.
12.I have black hair, but my sister has brown hair.
13.After I had gone to bed, my husband watched television for a while.
14.The house where Shakespeare was born burned down last year, but many tourists still visit that town.
15.Last year Bill went to New York for an international conference on global warming, but he didn’t have time to visit his cousins in Boston.
